New Date for 2014! 29 June
SUMMER LOVING AS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL EDINBURGH HALF MARATHON ANNOUNCES NEW
DATE FOR 2014 RACE IN BID TO BEAT THE SCOTTISH WEATHER
Competitor Group, organiser of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon, has announced the US running phenomenon will be returning to the capital for the third time on 29nd June 2014.
The popular event, which has taken place in April for the past two years, has been moved to June in a bid to beat the Scottish weather after participants faced torrential rain and gale force winds at this year’s race.
Despite the difficult conditions over 5000 runners, including 700 international participants battled the elements to experience the energy and excitement of the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon with runners coming from as far as Brazil, Singapore and Norway to be part of the action.
Organisers are hoping the new 2014 summer date will make the course more enjoyable for runners and attract even more international visitors to the city giving a welcome boost to the capital’s economy.
Radio presenter Diane Knox was the first person to sign up for the exhilarating race which sees bands performing at each mile point along the route and a Finish Line Festival concert for runners and supporters to party after the race.
Event Director Shannon Davis said: “We are excited to be bringing the Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon back in 2014; we had a great event in April this year but conditions were tough for our runners and unfortunately the bad weather meant we had to cancel our Finish Line Concert.
“After a lot of consideration, we have decided to move the race to June in a bid to beat the elements. We know the Scottish weather is always unpredictable so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed that the sun will be shining on the 22nd of June next year.
“We had just over 700 runners coming from around the world to take part in this year’s race and we expect the new date will encourage international participants to visit Scotland and take part in the race as part of their trip. Our Edinburgh route is unique in the fact that it is entirely focused on the city centre so it’s a great way for tourists to see the very best of the capital.
“We’ve also just launched our international campaign to promote the race – ‘Run Like a Scotsman, Rock Like a Scotsman, Party Like a Scotsman’ – we’re sure it will entice our Rock ‘n’ Roll fans across the world to come and experience for themselves a taste of Scotland, and its love of a good party.”
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon will take in some of the city’s most scenic views including the Meadows, the Mound, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle, Firth of Forth, Portobello Promenade and the Scottish Parliament. The final stretch travels along the Royal Mile with a glimpse of Arthur’s Seat in the background.
Registration will open late summer for the 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon at http://uk.competitor.com/edinburgh/register with early bird registration available– this includes a free Brooks technical t-shirt, a coveted Rock ‘n’ Roll finishers medal, live entertainment from local bands and plentiful support around the course including a sports drink and power energy gel.
Free packet postage will also be available for all UK runners who register before May 20.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon will support a number of great charities including Cancer Research UK, Team In Training, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Stroke Association and Children 1st, amongst others.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series started in San Diego in 1998- its concept fuses music with running to create a high-energy series of events that attracts over half a million runners each year in America.
